Island Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society held their bi-annual
fundraising Dinner on Saturday 14th November.
was held once again at the Eversley Hotel Ventnor.
What an amazing
event from start to finish , with 96 guests, over 125 lots and in excess
of 35 raffle prizes. Having enjoyed a three course dinner, the auction
began, slowly at first but soon reached full speed. Tim Smith of Island
Auction Rooms Shanklin, is a great supporter of the IOW MS Society and
as well as organising the event, he also performed as a very successful
auctioneer. He soon had the guests reaching deep in their pockets and
sometimes getting carried away with the bidding.
The evening offered over 125 interesting donated lots including: Premiership
football tickets and a waterproof camera thanks to RICHO, 14ct gold
earrings, Glass Art picture, Mini digger and driver, half a local lamb,
outside house clean, taxi return to any London airport, varied Island
business vouchers for meals, a trip around the Needles and much more.
Tim had to cope with lots of heckling and countered with his own banter.
Having described the half a spring lamb (donated by an Island farmer),
as a lovely lamb, one heckler asked how he knew, "It's not born
Half way through the lots, there was a break for people to replenish
their glasses and for the raffle to be drawn. Helen and Rod did a great
job selling raffle tickets, managing to sell over eight hundred pounds
worth. How Tim managed to finish the evening without losing his voice
was amazing, no microphone and working until the last lot was sold just
before midnight. The auction raised over £5,500 and a high quality
raffle raised £830. With donations due from employers schemes
from two committee members, along with further donations made this the
most successful fundraising event we have ever held. An impressive
£8,336 was the final event total.
Funds are used for people with M.S. on the IOW by way of providing grants
for living aids, specific alternative therapy subsidised voucher scheme
and monthly socials. This all helps to support and provide comfort to
many with the condition.
The committee expresses their thanks to Tim Smith and CROSS Printmedia
for their sponsorship and the many committee members for all their efforts.
Keith, the auctioneers dad-in-law made a special effort working
throughout the day.
None of this would have been possible if it wasnt for the most
generous donations and bidding from so many individuals.
GRATEFUL THANKS TO ALL WHO MADE IT SUCH A SUCCESS
